* The San Diego Go Card buys wholesale and purchases tickets for 48 tourist attractions in San Diego, including all the major tourist attractions (but none of the LA attractions, like Disneyland). Savings are advertised at 55%. If you can go to multiple venues during the same day (or 2-3 days) savings can be significant. Notice the pricing is $1 cheaper than the single-day entrance for two major attractions, Sea World and Legoland, which means savings even if only one attraction is visited. They also offer discounted “jump to the front of the line” passes that save time and allow more visits.

Jim’s Favorite FREE Excursion-North to South

Do it yourself. You can start at any of these locations (or skip one) to adjust the time of trip (times include driving). All attractions are free; you just pay for gas, parking and food. Addresses and contact info on “Local Attractions” above.

GO-TO Place Time Do What
1. Meditation Garden 30 min View beautiful garden, meditate, view ocean.
2. Torrey Pines Gliderport-Black’s Beach 45 min View hang gliders above or “bare facts” below
3. La Jolla Shores-Cove 1-2 hrs Window-shop La Jolla Cove; view sea lions on the coast; could lunch at George’s at the Cove.
4. Mount Soledad 45 min View much of San Diego from high coastal vantage point.
5. Little Italy 1 hr Walk around the shops and lunch, dinner, e.g. Filippi’s.
6. Seaport Village 1-2 hrs Shop, walk along bay.
7. Hotel Del Coronado 1 hr Explore hotel grounds (park block AFTER hotel for free). Have a drink on the outdoor patio
8. Cabrillo Monument 1-2 hrs Another famous view of San Diego. Hurry, closes at 5.
9. Grunion Run 1 hr For night owls, the CA version of a snipe hunt, except they’re real. Best night 5-26-13 12:40 am (i.e. 5-27). Go to nearest beach. I recommend La Jolla Shores.

1. To Encinitas Meditation Gardens (215 W K St, Encinitas 92024): From I-5 take Encinitas Blvd (exit 41B) West to Coast Highway (aka Highway 101). Turn left (south), after 0.8 miles and 2 stop signs, turn right at K St. Destination will be about 150 yards, a gate on the left. Park on street and walk in. Out of state visitors are let in free every day. (If you really feel you have to spend money, go to the San Diego Botanic Garden first, 2 miles away at 230 Quail Gardens Way.)

2. To Gliderport/Black’s Beach (2800 Torrey Pines Scenic Dr): Turn right on Coast Highway and stay on it (this is a beach town, why destroy the view with a freeway?). After 7.3 miles, you will be traveling up into Torrey Pines State Beach/Park and your nav system will say you are on Torrey Pines Rd instead of Coast Hwy (and it will be correct). Another 3.6 miles (10.9 miles total) turn right to stay on Torrey Pines Rd (sorry, you’re in CA). Then 0.4 miles turn right on Torrey Pines Scenic Dr. If it becomes a dirt parking lot, you found it! Spectacular view. If it’s windy, watch the hang gliders. If  adventurous, use your binoculars to check out the beach below, then follow a local down the trails.

3. To (La Jolla Shores/Cove): Get back on Torrey Pines Rd and turn right (south). After 1.2 miles, turn right on Torrey Pines Rd (yes, again, you’re in CA). After 2.7 Miles, turn right on to Prospect Place. You’re in La Jolla Cove. All kinds of shops on Prospect St (lunch at George’s at the Cove if your wallet is getting heavy). But also drive along the shoreline of Coast Blvd and check out the sea lions, if you can find a place to park. Cruise the park where I attended Love In 1968.

4. To Mount Soledad (Soledad Park Rd): Coast Blvd becomes Girard Ave; turn right on Prospect St for 0.1 mile and left onto Fay Ave for 0.8 miles. Turn left on W Muirlands Dr (for 1.5 miles) and wave at all the multi-million dollar homes, if you can see past the gates. Left on Nautilus for 1.0 mi, left on La Jolla Scenic Dr, then after 0.4 mi turn right into parking lot with huge cross. From that vantage point, you can see almost all of San Diego, unless it’s foggy (and we call tournament months “May Gray” and “June Gloom”).

5. To Little Italy (India St, downtown SD): Turn right out of the park on to Via Capri, After 1.2 miles of winding road and a 25 mph speed trap, when you find La Jolla Scenic Rd or La Jolla Parkway, turn right and after mile it’s finally OK to use the freeway (I-5 south). After 9.1 mi f freeway, take exit 17 to Front St/Civic Center and turn right on Cedar St. After 0.2 mi, turn right on India St and you’re in Little Italy.

6. To Seaport Village (849 W Harbor Dr): Head north on India St and turn left (w) on Hawthorn St, then left again on N Harbor Dr for a mile, enjoying the bay shoreline, where your destination will be on the right. You just passed the Star of India, San Diego Harbor Excursions and the USS Midway (for another day). The Gaslamp district night life is also just ahead, but you’re on a budget.

7. Hotel Del Coronado (1500 Orange Ave, Coronado CA): Head east on N Harbor Dr for 1.6 mi passing, Petco Park and the SD Convention Center. Turn left on Cesar Chavez Pkwy (you’re going through the Barrio) and make a slight right onto the Highway 75 off-ramp taking you across the Coronado Bridge. Turn left on Orange Ave and the hotel will be on the right after 1 mile. PASS THE HOTEL and park free on the next block (do not go into the lot). Now go act like a hotel guest and check out the grounds (we all do it).

8. Cabrillo Monument (1800 Cabrillo Memorial Dr): After 4:00 forget this stop. Back on Orange Ave and make a U-turn, then turn right on Glorietta Blvd. Follow golf course and pull to the far right for all the speed bumps; after 1 mi turn right back on the Coronado Bridge (Hwy 75). Stay left to merge on I-5 North and take exit 18A on to Pacific Highway. Take the left-side off ramp on to Barnett Ave (which becomes Lytton St, which becomes Catalina Blvd) and after 3.5 mi turn left on Catalina Blvd. Passing Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, continue 3-4 miles until the end of all land as you reach the Point. Here’s where Juan Rodrigo Cabrillo discovered land in 1542. Nice view of San Diego! If you're here during a minus tide (extreme low tide), follow the signs before the monument to the Cabrilo Tidepools and explore at will; don't take anything from the ocean. In 2015 there will be 0 or minus tides May 22 at 7am and May 23 at 8am.

9. Grunion Run: You made it this far, why not stay out all night (especially if you’re playing a SD team)? Go back to La Jolla Cove and find La Jolla Shores. At about midnight, the little critters will start bombarding the beach (if you’re lucky). In 2015, the grunion will run May 18-21 (closed season; look only). You have to catch them by hand (it’s the law). I wouldn’t eat them; they’re all bone. But you can say you were there.
